Welcome to Shelby High School
Welcome to the 2016-17 school year! We are very excited to get the year going and are looking forward to another amazing year. We want to especially welcome our freshmen and our new students and hope that you have a wonderful experience at Shelby High School.
We have some new staff members joining us this year: Mrs. Susan Ramsey, lunch room supervisor; Ms. Linda Young, aide; Miss Brittany Morgan, aide; Ms. Bobbi Weaver, school counselor; Mr. Christian Watson, assistant band director; Mrs. Ruth Watts, math; Mrs. Stephanie Gribble, math.
It has been well documented that education is changing. There are new standards, new assessments, and new requirements from the Ohio Department of Education, just to name a few. All of these changes can cause frustration among students, parents and staff. We know that everyone deals with frustration in different ways, but one thing that we have noticed over the years is that students have a tendency to give up or find the “easy way out” in order to deal with their frustration. This reaction is understandable and is even seen in adults when faced with something new. This reaction is also counterproductive and limits what our students can achieve. We know that today’s graduates will change jobs many times and 65% of today’s students will work in jobs that do not exist yet (U.S. Dept. of Labor). We need students to be able to work through their frustrations and learn how to overcome obstacles in order to be successful in our changing world.
One term you will hear quite often this year is grit- the ability to work hard for a long period of time toward a focused goal and keep moving forward in spite of challenges, obstacles and failures (Duckworth, University of Pennsylvania). We will be focusing on helping students overcome obstacles and adversity this year. This work can get messy at times, frustrating at times, but is very worthwhile.
Throughout the year I will share articles and other resources with parents to help you see what we are trying to do and hopefully allow you to help your child develop grit.
Thank you for your support of our students in the past. Other districts look on in envy when they see the number of people we have at games, plays, concerts or other events in the district. Please know that the students and staff of Shelby appreciate all that you do.
Let’s have a great 2016-17 school year and Go Whippets!
